Editing

We have just wrapped up the Editing process for EL REY, with our Editor Extraodinaire Patrícia Saramago. Along side Stefan, she has had to draw on all of her considerable experience to carve out the story of the film from the hundreds of hours of raw footage! Whew, what a job!!

EL REY ON TOUR

Stefan and his band Dia Rea were invited to play at Explosiv Bar, Austria. It was great to be back on stage after such a long time away.

They played music from the EL REY soundtrack, and then held a preview screening of the film.

Check out the video of Stefan and the band performing the song Gringo.

Sólo tú -- The True Story

We have had a great response to the Mariachi Pub Crawl story & to the How It All Began slideshow, thanks for all your emails. There has also been quite a few comments about the slideshow song ‘Sólo tú’, so we thought it might be nice to share the story behind that…

The following is the true story!

Sólo tú is a song I wrote about a date I had on my very first trip to Costa Rica. I met Carmen on a long bus ride & we connected, so I asked her out. She met me at a bar, but turned up with her WHOLE FAMILY. I was stunned as Carmen, her mother, nieces et all, greeted me as if this was the most normal thing in the world.

Instantly, she grabbed my hand and led me to the dance floor, and I found myself gyrating rhythmically with this pretty girl in front of her whole family. And, as if my discomfort wasn’t enough, I was then passed between her niece, her mother & her, each in turn, all totally happy to writhe to the beat against me, crotch to crotch, breast to chest, no hesitation, no gap, no worries!

And on it went, song after song, hour after hour. I quickly ditched the beer & started downing tequila shots, vainly trying to steal myself to this quasi-pornographic merry-go-round. The thing I haven’t told you is her mother was young; she’d had Carmen when she was only 14 so she was closer to my age and a total knockout. I didn’t know how to cope with being groped by my date AND her smoking hot mother, it all started to get a bit much.

Four hours in I couldn’t take it anymore; I was wasted and completely confused about Carmen & her mother. I realised I had to extract myself from the situation fast, without offending anyone but with my dignity intact! I made every excuse possible, profusely apologising, and fled to my hotel exhausted but relieved.

The Lyrics for the slideshow song:

Sólo tú Only You
Este día empezó como todos The day started like every other
con un vaso de café with a cup of coffee
y un poco de música – reggae. and a little music -- reggae.
En el bus yo te vi y de una vez sabia On the bus I saw you, & I just knew
necesito conocerte, conocerte. I had to get to know you, get to know you.
Sólo tú, sólo tú Only you, only you
estabas conmigo you’re with me
en este bus lleno de gente y de ruido on the bus, full of people & noise
Sólo tú, sólo tú Only you, only you
en este bus lleno de gente y de ruido on the bus, full of people & noise
Yo me levanté I stood up
y me senté a tu lado, & I went & sat next to you
me dijiste “mi gringo, you said: “my gringo
nos vemos hoy en la noche” let’s meet up tonight”
Fuimos a un bar con todos tus amigos, We went to a bar with all your friends,
con tu sobrina y con tu mama with your niece & with your mother,
con tu mama. with your mother.
Sólo tú, sólo tú Only you, only you
estabas conmigo you’re with me
en este bar lleno de gente y de ruido at the bar, full of people and noise.
Sólo tú, sólo tú Only you, only you
estabas conmigo you’re with me
en este bar lleno de gente y de ruido at the bar, full of people and noise.
Yo bailé con tu mama, I danced with your mother,
con tu sobrina y contigo. with your niece and with you.
Me tomé cervezas y tequilas I drank beers and tequilas
para no empezar a pensar, in order to stop thinking,
a pensar, a pensar. thinking, thinking.
Sólo tú, sólo tú Only you, only you
estabas sin mi, sin mi you’re without me, without me
porque me fui con tu mama because I’d left with your mother
Sólo tú, sólo Only you, alone
estabas sin mi, sin mi you’re without me, without me
porque me fui con tu mama because I’d left with your mother
con tu mama. with your mother

Mariachi Pub Crawl

One of my best memories of Adi & I back home in Austria, is of the night we decided to walk the Gürtel (ringroad in Vienna), playing impromptu wherever we went (à la Mariachis). Our aim was to drop into several places uninvited & unannounced, performing a small set to entice the crowd to get involved, dance, hopefully interact with us! Of course this is rather unusual in Austria, so sometimes it worked well, and others it failed miserably!

At Spark Bar & a friends party we were received with open arms; people seemed to enjoy the music, some even dancing and singing along.
But at some of the other bars we were met with stony silence where everyone seemed to continue about their business, completely ignoring us, hoping we would just leave.

With our tails between our legs we headed to more friendly territory to drink a few beers and salvage our courage and pride to play again.
This was a great crash course in perseverance and performance resilience for Adi and I considering the journey we later decided to take!!!

Do you have any stories about being shot down in flames when trying something a little unconventional?
